Phil with NW Hoops IS having his tourney afterall. Though d1 coaches will not be able to attend he will have lots of JC's there as well as NAIA and D2 coaches will keep you posted. I am looking for other opportunities I like it becuase it is right in our back yard and because it is inexpensive.

Moving forward. We will have a game on Saturday at West Salem at 5pm in Addition to the games at the Hoop at 2 and 3. We will not play over memorial day weekend in Seattle. Our funds are low and I would rather spend those remaining funds for our July tourneys. As soon as the HS summer season starts we will limit our practices. The HS players will be busy with their summer basketball leagues. We will have a couple of practices in June before the rose city showcase that starts on the 11th of June. Please remind me of who is available and who is not. IT IS VERY VERY important that you seniors especially get in shape...real basketball shape to put yourself in the best possible situation to perform at your best!! That means eat right, sleep right, rest right, etc. Give yourself the best possible chance by being in great shape.

July will be a busy month let me know if you will be missing any dates in July. This is the most important time of the summer for all of the players. This is the "live" period where Division 1 coaches can scout and watch the boys play. I have several colleges contact me about our players and others. Most of these coaches are NAIA and JC coaches. They all have $ for partial scholarships. Feel free to talk to me about the process and where I see your son playing at the next level. BASKETBALL MUST BE THE PRIORITY IN JULY OVER ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES, VACATIONS, ETC.

July 6th-8th we will be here in Portland playing and then immediately leave to Bellvue on the 9th-11th for a very nice tourney there. We will leave on the 21st or 22nd to Las Vagas til the 26th.

Practice - S. Meadows, 7:00 Tues, Thurs, Fri. DO NOT MISS PRACTICE! We do have a local tournament this weekend, TBD.

Basketball is funny...game #4 we played against a local team from Yakima that has played together a lot. We struggled but finally pulled away and had a comfortable 20 pt. lead until the last 2 minutes of the game, when we relaxed and they got within 9. Until we won by 15 points. What I am trying to get all the players to learn is regardless of the score or regardless of the talent of the other team, we always, always have to respect our opponent at all times. I am trying to get them to not relax. Most of our mistakes are mental lapses of judgement.

Game #5 - the Championship. I am a little surprised that we made it to the Championship to defend our title from last year! On a real positive note, it is very difficult to play 5 games of intense basketball with only 7 players. We had a comfortable lead of about 12 points the entire game, thanks to Victor's heroics, who ended up scoring 1/2 of our teams points. We found our 12 point lead evaporating quickly in the last 3 minutes of the game, as our tanks were empty both mentally and physically. We were down by 1 point, our ball, we scored to be up 1 point with 20 seconds to go. They missed their shot with 8 seconds left, our ball underneath their basket. We turned the ball over on the inbound play. So, were up 1, their ball, under their basket. They get a shot off, Hayes rebounds the miss, gets fouled, makes a free throw. Game over, we win by 2!

A lesson to learn: in the last game as the boys were both mentally and physically fatigued, they fell back to old bad habits! And, like a small child began to whine and complain as things didn't go their way. The lesson to be learned from this is, like in life, as things get difficult and unfair, we need to stay mentally strong and focused. I was extremely proud of the boys overall, they played great and it is nice to win a Championship! Lastly, the big picture is that we improve individually and as a team regardless of the outcome.

WOW did I say basketball is a funny thing...... we played a very mediocre team again they hustled and we just came out complacent, we didn't shoot the lights out. They were a high school team and they game up 3-4 inches per man. Defensively we were lazy, kids not moving their feet, they got some confidence and momentum and hit some shots. They got to the basket and got lots of easy layups and points in the paint! How with our size advantage I have no idea! ( mother I did not scream and yell or cuss at the kids I stayed level headed) We were down by 6 at the half even at the end of 3 and then with some huge plays by vic and hayes we ended up tying it up at the end of regulation. Vic hit a couple of nice threes and a HUGE steal for a layup and Hayes made several clutch hoops. Tyler played most of the 2nd half and had some really nice put backs and rebounds as the. Zack was a trooper fought the whole game hit some FT's some nice put backs and solid d and played nearly the whole game. John had some great baskets that we needed badly during some dry spells!! ....we won by 1 in overtime hayes was fould on a 3 hit them all mark hit 2 ft's to ice it. .........Here is the deal. As an athlete ...a real athlete you need to come ready everyday regardless of the the competition. It has to do with respecting the opponent and the game itself. Also creates a consistent mental mindset in all situations. Most the kids at this level are playing for a reason. All are capable of making a big play getting hot sticking a few threes. After an amazing game yesterday we slipped a bit today in game one but.........we lived to play another game and advanced! We play at 1pm if we win we play at 5 in the championship lose we
play at 3;40 in the consolation game. 3-0 with 2 games to go. I am a bit worried with only 7 players I think we will run out of gas at some point.......stay tuned!!!

Basketball is kinda funny.......We are here in Yakima with 7 players. Got some guys gone some kids that couldn't make it. Nice place, and comfortable. We are rested and play our first game at 11:40 after a great breakfast thanks to Dotty Sonnemaker. We play a very mediocre team, just not much size, not great players we struggle all game but have a decent 10-14 point lead, bad decisions makes the game a bit closer and we win by 10 after them getting it down to 7 in the 4th q. .....Game #2 3:40 we play what is perhaps the best team in Idaho several good players good shooters good size and they have played a lot together.........we win by 30 ad have a 20 point lead at the half. Mark was Huge!!! I was able to keep him on the floor because he gave great defensive effort.best he has done and because of that he bangs down
5 3's hits some free throws, and has a very effecient game. It all happened because of his defense and moving his feet!!! Best game by far for him. Hayes was amazing shot great but not one TO or bad pass. Vic was very solid hit some great shots scored both on the drive and on the catch. Zach was huge and had some great defensive stops and some great put backs and keeping the ball alive. John is getting better and better each day. I am very proud of him. He has improved so much a great attitude and work ethic. Getting better every time out and he is seeing the big picture. I can't tell you how impressed I am with John!! Joel did great and s getting better each time out, Tyler was amazing had some great rebounds and was a dominate force on their big guys. We are 2-0 and play in the championships of the to seeded teams. Dinner at Sonnemakers at 7pm!!! hope all is well. Our bigs dominated their bigs which was the difference.........stay tuned peace

practice times this week---GAMES

WE WILL PRACTICE THIS WEEK TUES WED THURS
Call me if you have questions. Tuesday we will be at SAC however sometimes we will be practicing elsewhere and will get you the information later. 503 875 8281 you can also text me too. Need to get $ this week.

I am keeping many more players than originally planned. You may see 16+ at practices and this is why.

#1. I have a group of very good players that did not make the team but they want to continue to improve by working out with us and by being a part of our program. My philosophy is one of being inclusive NOT exclusive. My goals are to help others get better.

#2. We may have a player or two that may sign with a college program and if they do they can't play in sanctioned AAU/NCAA tourneys. Also with injury illness and conflicts I need the #'s for practice. We will also be losing a player in July, and perhaps one after May and I have one with a conflict on one of our game days. SO if your son happens to be 11th or 12th on our list it may be very probable that in a month or so he may be #8 on the list.

#3. With the exception of 4-5 kids the others at their specific positions proved to be very equal to each other in most areas(especially with our wings and posts) and each have valuable qualities. These are players that deserve to be on a team and will definatley move up as plyers sign get hurt or have other conflicts and can't make a game.

My advice to all work hard every day by brining your lunch pail and hard hat and you will get better little by little.

Because of the number we have in our TOTAL PROGRAM I have entered a team from our program into a high school varsity league at the Beaverton YMCA HOOP. (Formerly the Beaverton Hoop) This team will play 2 games each Saturday 14 games over the next 7 weeks. The boys that play in this league may change a bit from week to week depending on their schedules and who we will be taking with us to other tourneys.

One group of boys will be playing in a tourney this weekend at West Salem HS 10 am. We will also have seperate group of boys playing at the HOOP and will have those times by Thursday. I will let the boys know who is playing where this week. I know we have 3-4 boys with conflicts this weekend and will miss all or part.

CALL ME WITH QUESTIONS BE FLEXIBLE! Trust me I have a method to my madness.

Team Oregon General info 4/2/10 Method to my madness

Please refer to this site for up to date information on practice schedules, game schedules travel plans etc. I will do my best to update it regularly. I would like to use this site to share information and updates rather than sending out multiple
e-mails or having to make multiple phone calls. Check this blog daily for updates. Please have patience with me I have a busy young family with 3 girls all busy with other sports, a wife I intend to stay married to, all going in many directions, am spread an inch deep and a mile wide. PLEASE CHECK THE BLOG BEFORE YOU CALL!!!

I will post the final roster by April 5th. Because I have a few unsigned seniors on the team(if they sign with a school they are not eligible to play in NCAA/AAU santioned tourney's)and because I have several kids that deserve to be on the team I will most likely carry 12 or 13 on the roster with 2 or 3 being alternates. I would prefer to carry 9 however carrying 12-13 kids is the right thing to do this year. I know one will be heading back to Germany before the summer is over and one that is not available for Sunday games. There also tends to be illness, family activites, school activities, prom, injuries, seniors that sign, etc that will prevent players from making it to all the tourneys. I feel there is great value this year in keeping 12-13 on the roster. It makes sense and feels right to me even though I have never carried more than 10 on any team I have coached in the past.

Playing time
Playing time will be dictated by me alone and I will be playing our best players that give us the best chance of winning and advancing in each tourney we enter.

Practices
It is required that the players come to all practices. I need to know up front if they are sick or can't other wise come to practice. My cell is 503 875 8281 texting works great and I have access to e mail on my phone as well coachgarrity@yahoo.com. We will try to practice 3 days per week and less once the HS basketball summer season starts. Most practices will be held at Sunset Athletic Club in Beaverton unless otherwise noted. Weekly practices will be held closer to 8pm as that is when the gym is more available. Saturday practices will be held in the mornings or late afternoon or early evening for the same reasons. We will not practice Sundays. Please let me know ASAP in detail if conflicts in schedules and other previous scheduled activites and dates where your son is not available. Our emphasis in practice will be individual skill development which includes shooting, court awareness, playing to your strengths, improving on weaknesses and the mental part of the game. I can tell right away from what I have seen so far with the exception of 4 or 5 players we will need to be much more tough mentally by trying to impose our will on our opponents. Some will need to play with much more emotion and passion and must push themselves much harder. I expect each player to come ready every day to get better and to compete.

cost
AAU is expensive. Tourney fees run from $350-$600 per event, hotels and travel is also expensive. I need to pay for gym time, uniforms, etc. If you are in a position to help a little extra or have a company that may be a willing sponsor us let me know. We have a few very deserving players that will struggle to come up with the full amount. Frequent flyer miles can be useful to reduce costs or if any of you have hotel vouchers that we can use please let me know. Because I am paying for costs up front I would ask that you pay all the AAU fees up front as well. Please make checks payable to "Hoop Camp" which is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization that I direct and run all my basketball related finances through. If paying up front is a problem or you need to make special arrangements let me know by contacting me immediately. Unlike many AAU caoches, I do not make money on the team and I pay all of my own expenses. What you pay goes directly to the teams expenses. I will be running some camps this year and the boys can earn money by working the camps.
travel
I will update our travel plans as I get it. The boys are responsible for the cost of thier own meals while on the road. We will need help with drivers for those of you that can travel with us. Parents, friends and family are always welcome and your son is welcome to stay with family as well if that is preferred. I will talk to the boys about our rules on the road.

April 10-11 tourney in salem or Eugene?? may be too late to enter.

April 16-18 Friends of Hoop Tourney in Seattle, we have not made hotel plans can someone take the ball and run with it for me. I like staying in a house if possible or if anyone has family there with a big enough place for some or all???? if not we will need to find a hotel.

April 23-24 Boise. Friday Saturday. We will need additional drivers it is a 6-7 hour trip and we lose an hour as Boise is one hour ahead. We will be leaving April 22nd around noon so the boys will need to get out of school early.

April 30th-May 2nd Portland Spring Invitational

May 14-16 Best in West Yakima we are staying at the Ramada Inn 509 453 1391 818 N 1st in Yakima. If you plan on coming I would call NOW to book your room as there is a big basketball tourney and soccer tourney and ALL the Hotels are pretty much already completely booked to capacity.

YOU MUST GET A CARD AND AN AAU # OR YOU CAN"T PLAY!!! please go to aausports.org and sign up for a card it is very easy. print it out and i MUST have a copy of it. THIS IS A MUST If you don't we can't enter many of the tourneys.
